Homegroup takes the headache out of sharing files and printers on a home network. Connect two or more PCs running Windows 7, and HomeGroup makes it easy to automatically start sharing your music, pictures, video, and document libraries with others in your home. The new “Share with” menu, meanwhile, provides a speedy way to share individual files.

Concerned about privacy? HomeGroup is password-protected and puts you in total control. You decide what gets shared—and what stays private. You can also make your files "read only," so other people can look at (but not touch) your stuff.

You can join a homegroup in any edition of Windows 7, but you can only create one in Home Premium, Professional, or Ultimate.

Join a homegroup
After someone on your network creates a homegroup, the next step is to join it. You will need the homegroup password, which you can get from the person who created the homegroup. When you join a homegroup, all user accounts on your computer become members of the homegroup.
To join a homegroup, follow these steps on the computer that you want to add to the homegroup:

1.Open HomeGroup by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, typing homegroup in the search box, and then clicking HomeGroup.

2.Click Join now, and then complete the wizard.

Note
If you don't see the Join now button, there might not be a homegroup available. Make sure that someone has created a homegroup first. Or you can choose to create a homegroup yourself.

Where can I find my homegroup password?

If you ever forget your homegroup password, you can find it by opening HomeGroup in Control Panel on a computer that's part of the homegroup. Here’s how:

1.Open HomeGroup by clicking the Start button , clicking Control Panel, typing homegroup in the search box, and then clicking HomeGroup.

2.Click View or print the homegroup password.
